The Messy Middle

I Did 18,000 Pushups

how's that for a headline?

No, that is not my arm. A girl can dream right?

I accepted a challenge from a trainer and completed 18,000 pushups in 2018.

50 pushups a day, with up to 5 rest days allowed.

Yes, the math is correct. 50 x 360 = 18,000.

Go me!

I was reminded of this accomplishment because I’m celebrating progress toward a health-related goal I’ve been working on for months. I tend not to celebrate myself, even though I enjoy celebrating others and their achievements. God is so good, and He deserves the glory for all the good things in my life. Marking moments such as this is important.

It is such a kindness from God when you are nudged to pause in the middle of your day to recognize something - a whisper from Him, a nod toward what’s next, or crossing into new territory for your health goals. I appreciate that Jesus cares so much about our entire lives. He will bring my attention to something that matters to me, yet I could have zoomed right past it in the middle of my busy, messy life.

I wasn’t focused on what I needed to be focused on during this morning’s workout, so I didn’t recognize what I had achieved. How many times have I found myself distracted by nonsense and not what God has for me, and missed something significant? Probably many, many times.

I’d bet you have done the same. We are attracted to things we shouldn’t be, things that aren’t helpful to us, and things that don’t bring glory to God. Sometimes, the things we focus on aren’t sinful, but are simply a waste of time. I do tend to cram as much as I can into every day, and that often comes back to bite me in the worst way. I’m working on doing better this year. I need to keep the main thing, the main thing, and focus on one thing at a time. Pay attention.

This world is full of distractions, yet some are unavoidable. Children, illness, and work responsibilities are just a few things that can rightly command our attention, but they can also interrupt our plans for the day. I carry a full plate of responsibilities and am working on slimming down what I think I can accomplish in a day. I often wonder why I struggle to cross the finish line on things that matter to me. (Insert face palm here).
